Mercedes-Benz is celebrating 25 years of the R 230 SL, a model that combined roadster character with grand-touring comfort, modern technology and a wide range of performance options. Introduced in 2001, the R 230 was designed for both relaxed long-distance driving and more dynamic use. Its styling, technical innovations and versatility have since helped establish it as a desirable modern classic.
A defining feature was the electrically operated vario-roof, which transformed the SL from a coupé into a roadster, or vice versa, in 16 seconds using a button or remote control.
The system used 11 hydraulic cylinders, 17 limit switches and numerous sensors. Its rear window rotated around a horizontal axis during operation to preserve more luggage space with the roof lowered.
Mercedes-Benz also introduced what it described as the world’s first panoramic vario-roof with a glass section, creating a more open atmosphere even when closed.
Models specified through the designo programme, the predecessor to today’s MANUFAKTUR offering, remain particularly sought after. Options included bespoke paintwork, premium Nappa leather, two-tone interiors and exclusive trim materials.
The SL 500 made its world premiere at Hamburg’s Deichtorhallen on July 31, 2001. Its 5.0-litre V8 produced 225kW, equivalent to 306hp.
The range soon expanded with the supercharged SL 55 AMG, producing 350kW or 476hp, followed by V12 models including the twin-turbocharged SL 600. The line-up ultimately peaked with the SL 65 AMG Black Series, which developed 493kW or 670hp.
Two days before the model’s official unveiling, the SL 55 AMG appeared as the Formula 1 Safety Car at the German Grand Prix on July 29, 2001, demonstrating the new generation’s sporting character.
The R 230’s passive-safety structure combined high-strength steel, aluminium, magnesium and plastics. Despite its lightweight construction, Mercedes-Benz claimed it was 20 per cent more torsionally rigid than the preceding R 129.
A newly developed head-thorax side airbag combined the functions of side and window airbags to reduce injury risk.
Aerodynamic efficiency also improved, with the drag coefficient falling from 0.32 on the R 129 to 0.29. Airflow management was also designed to reduce draughts when driving with the roof down.
Mercedes-Benz produced 169,433 examples of the R 230 at its Bremen plant between 2001 and 2011.
Its broad range, distinctive design, corrosion protection and reliability have helped many examples remain on the road, while designo-equipped cars and high-performance AMG derivatives are among the most desirable.
The Mercedes-Benz MB-80 warranty package is available for the R 230 and its R 231 successor.
It covers unexpected repair costs involving selected powertrain and electronic components for vehicles up to 20 years old with no more than 200,000km recorded.
Repairs are carried out by Mercedes-Benz service centres using Mercedes-Benz Classic Genuine Parts. Mercedes-Benz describes MB-80 as its first retrospectively purchasable vehicle warranty, available through authorised partners across Europe.
