Just yesterday, we were invited to an important automotive event. There were no massive crowds, no curtain raisers, no billboard-sized digital screens and no flashing advertorials shouting the car’s credentials. But there was still plenty of drama. We were attending an exclusive preview of the all-new XPENG GX, the brand’s latest flagship luxury SUV. This was a private customer event and, more importantly, the model’s first showing outside mainland China. Was it worth the attention? Absolutely. The event was held at the XPENG showroom on the busy Sheikh Zayed Road. Inside, every other XPENG model had been moved out to make way for six GX display cars, each finished in a different colour.
The GX is a striking piece of automotive architecture, defined by smooth surfaces, minimalist detailing and a strong sense of road presence. At 5,265 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,800 mm tall, with a 3,115 mm wheelbase, this luxury SUV has a substantial footprint.
With its sleek surfaces, integrated lighting, intelligent electric doors, pop-out handles and welcome steps, the GX gives off the impression of a premium SUV designed for quiet confidence rather than loud excess. It also sits on stylish, multi-spoke 22-inch Coronal wheels. From some angles, you may even see hints of the NIO EL8, large Li Auto SUVs or a Range Rover.
Exterior colours include Arctic White, Midnight Black and Fjord Grey as standard options. Desert Gold Matte costs AED 8,000, while Cloud Realm two-tone costs AED 11,000.
Step inside, and this is where the money starts to feel well spent. The cabin can be specified with Brown Nappa leather or Grey Nappa leather, while Purple Nappa leather costs an additional AED 3,000.
The design follows modern-day minimalism, but with enough shiny details to keep things interesting. The GX gets an 8.8-inch Technology Island instrument display, a 17.3-inch floating multimedia touchscreen, an 88-inch light-tracking panoramic AR-HUD, CarPlay and Android Auto.
There is also a 33-speaker Lingjing AI Sound Max system, including headrest speakers and three exterior speakers. Yes, speakers on the outside — you read that right.
What really takes the cake is the seating. The GX is a six-seater, with executive-style comfort across the cabin. The front row gets electric steering adjustment, steering wheel heating, a 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a queen’s front passenger zero-gravity seat, heating, ventilation and 16-point massage.
The second row is where the GX makes its strongest luxury statement. The right-side premium zero-gravity seat offers 16-way electric adjustment, one-touch zero-gravity mode, an electrically adjustable levelling armrest, 16-point massage and a dedicated cushion airbag.
Second-row passengers also get heating and ventilation, leg-rest heating, headrest speakers, hidden cupholders, a folding table with magnetic function, a 180 mm ultra-wide central aisle and a panoramic roof. A 21.4-inch 3K roof-mounted rear entertainment screen is part of the Second Row Entertainment Package.
The third row is not an afterthought either. It gets electric triple folding, advanced leather seats, heating, electric stepless backrest adjustment from 0 to 180 degrees, electric headrest adjustment and armrest cupholders. When folded, it creates a flat storage area and reveals a concealed sunken luggage case.
The GX is listed as an REEV, or range-extended electric vehicle, in both AWD Flagship and AWD Ultra specifications. It uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged intercooled range extender, dual-motor all-wheel drive and a 63.3 kWh liquid-cooled LFP battery.
The front motor produces 160 kW and 230 Nm, while the rear motor produces 210 kW and 465 Nm. Combined output is 370 kW, or 503 hp, and 695 Nm, with a maximum speed of 200 km/h.
The GX also uses a full-domain 800V high-voltage platform, 800V electric drive motors and a 5C ultra-fast-charging AI battery. XPENG claims a 1,240 km WLTP comprehensive range and a 310 km WLTP pure-electric range. Fuel consumption in low state-of-charge condition is listed at 6.79 L/100 km, with a 60-litre fuel tank and 92-octane or above fuel requirement.
Charging capacity is listed at 7 kW AC and 350 kW DC, with 10-80 per cent DC fast charging in around 11.7 minutes and up to 301 km of energy replenishment in 12 minutes, depending on conditions.
The brochure notes no autonomous driving features, although it does list a wide suite of driver assistance and safety systems. Any future autonomous capability would likely depend on local regulatory approval. A full drive experience should tell us much more about how this flagship SUV performs on UAE roads.
Prices start from AED 299,000, approximately US$81,400, including VAT for the AWD Flagship Specification (GCC spec), while the AWD Ultra Specification (Chinese spec) is priced from AED 245,000, approximately US$66,700, including VAT. The booking fee is AED 10,000, approximately US$2,700, subject to production and supply availability.
Expected deliveries start from September 2026 for the Ultra and January 2027 for the Flagship. The Flagship gets a 7-year/160,000 km vehicle warranty, while the Ultra gets a 5-year/120,000 km vehicle warranty. Both receive an 8-year/160,000 km battery warranty.
That positions the GX as a luxury SUV with a relatively accessible price tag. In other words, if you had your heart set on something like a Range Rover, the XPENG GX may leave you with enough change to think about a villa down payment instead.
