New Volvo XC60, XC90 PHEVs get up to 200 km EV range

The new long-range plug-in hybrid versions of the XC60 and XC90 deliver up to 200 km of electric range, significantly increased battery capacity, and enhanced hybrid performance for European and US markets.
Volvo Cars has launched its first long-range plug-in hybrid SUVs, introducing updated versions of the Volvo XC60 and Volvo XC90 with significantly extended electric driving capability. The updated XC60 now offers up to 200 km of electric-only range, while the larger XC90 delivers up to 160 km, based on preliminary WLTP figures. Volvo says this represents more than 2.5 times the electric range of its previous plug-in hybrid models. The improvement comes from a larger floor-mounted battery and a more powerful electric motor, while the petrol engine remains available for longer journeys. Both SUVs will also continue to be offered with mild-hybrid powertrains. Volvo positions these long-range PHEVs as a key step in its transition to full electrification, enabling most daily driving, including commuting, school runs and weekend trips to be completed without tailpipe emissions.
XC60 gets up to 200 km EV range
The XC60 long-range PHEV uses a 41.2 kWh battery, with 37.9 kWh usable capacity. The T6 AWD pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 180 hp with a 177 hp rear electric motor, delivering a combined 262 kW (around 356 hp). It accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 5.7 seconds, has a top speed of 180 km/h, and offers up to 200 km of WLTP electric range.
The more powerful T8 AWD combines a 250 hp petrol engine with the same electric motor, producing 339 kW (approximately 461 hp). It completes 0–100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and offers around 189 km of electric range.
Total combined driving range is listed at approximately 1,240 km for the T6 and 1,230 km for the T8. Both versions use an eight-speed automatic transmission and support a maximum towing capacity of 2,250 kg.
XC60 receives major design update
The updated XC60 also features a comprehensive exterior redesign, including a new grille, front bumper, bonnet, front wings and alloy wheel designs. Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights have been refined, while the rear design includes updated tail lamps, tailgate and bumper with stronger horizontal lines to create a wider stance.
Inside, the cabin gets a redesigned dashboard and door panels, new wood trims and Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather upholstery, along with upgraded ambient lighting.
As for the dimensions, the XC60 measures 4,708 mm in length, 1,902 mm in width and approximately 1,656 mm in height, with a 2,865 mm wheelbase. Ground clearance ranges from 200 to 209 mm depending on specification.
New safety and infotainment technology
Volvo has further enhanced the XC60’s safety systems with upgraded active-safety features capable of warning or intervening in potential collision scenarios. These include automatic emergency braking, emergency steering support and a system that alerts occupants to approaching cyclists when opening doors. The updated sensor suite combines radars and cameras, enabling features such as lane-change assistance and a 360-degree camera with 3D view.
Inside, an 11.2-inch touchscreen runs Volvo Car UX, while integration of Google Gemini enables natural-language voice commands for navigation, communication and trip planning.
XC90 also gains longer electric range
The seven-seat XC90 builds on its recent updates with the addition of extended electric range, while maintaining its focus on safety, comfort and Scandinavian luxury design. The cabin features premium materials, natural light and wood finishes, with an optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Like the XC60, it also integrates Google Gemini for enhanced voice functionality.
Strategy and availability
Volvo says these new long-range PHEVs support its global electrification strategy, bridging the gap between conventional hybrids and fully electric vehicles.
Order books for both the XC60 and XC90, including Black Edition variants, are now open in selected markets, with production scheduled to begin in autumn 2026. Both models will receive regular over-the-air updates.
Volvo notes that all range figures are preliminary and actual performance will vary depending on factors such as temperature, terrain, driving style, speed and vehicle specification.
