The smart #2 will also use a 35.8 kWh battery targeting around 300 km of WLTP range, support 10–80 per cent DC charging in 20 minutes, and feature rear-wheel drive with 50:50 weight distribution

Smart has revealed new technical details of the upcoming smart #2, its all-electric two-seat city car, ahead of the production model’s world premiere at the Paris Motor Show on October 12. The new model is built on smart’s Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), developed specifically for a car measuring less than three metres long. The platform is designed to combine compact exterior dimensions with usable cabin space, an electric powertrain, safety structures and agile handling.

35.8 kWh battery and around 300 km range

The smart #2 EV uses a 35.8 kWh battery with CATL cells and is targeting approximately 300 km of WLTP range.

It will also support DC fast charging from 10 to 80 per cent in 20 minutes, improving usability for urban and short-distance driving.

The ECA platform integrates an 11-in-1 electric drive unit, combining several electric-drive, power-electronics and control functions into a compact package to maximise space efficiency.

New Tridion Cell Evo safety structure

The new Tridion Cell Evo forms the core of the smart #2’s safety structure.

More than 78 per cent of the body structure uses high-strength steel, with some materials offering tensile strength of up to 1,800 MPa. The structure has a torsional stiffness of 39,000 Nm/deg and is designed to withstand a roof load of more than four tonnes.

The car also features seven airbags, an advanced seatbelt system and layered battery protection. In testing, smart says the #2 achieved 78 km/h in the Moose Test and a static rollover angle of 45.9 degrees.

Rear-wheel drive and five-link suspension

Urban manoeuvrability is one of the smart #2’s standout features. It has a tiny 6.95-meter curb-to-curb turning circle, making it ideal for tight city streets. According to smart, it is also the only vehicle in the sub-three-metre segment with a rear five-link independent suspension.

It uses rear-wheel drive, a 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution and staggered-width tyres, with narrower tyres at the front and wider ones at the rear.

Mercedes-Benz design

The smart #2 has been styled by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team and retains the brand’s traditional “wheels-at-the-corners” layout, with short overhangs intended to maximise interior space while maintaining its compact footprint.

The fully realized production model will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show on October 12.

smart notes that the technical specifications and performance figures released so far are preliminary and subject to final homologation, while the quoted WLTP range remains a target figure and has not yet been certified.
