Smart has unveiled the all-new smart #2 at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, bringing back its ultra-compact electric two-seater with a 35.8 kWh battery, up to 290 km of preliminary WLTP range and 10–80% DC fast charging in approximately 20 minutes

The new smart #2 marks the return of the brand's compact two-seater city car, 30 years after the original smart two-seater concept debuted in Paris. The fully electric model retains the distinctive proportions, two-tone styling and split tailgate associated with the smart fortwo while introducing a new electric platform, updated safety structure, revised suspension and modern connectivity.

Smart #2 Dimensions and Design

Measuring 2,746 mm in length, the smart #2 retains the original model's wheels-at-the-corners layout, helping maximise cabin space within its compact footprint.

A kerb-to-kerb turning circle of just 6.95 metres is designed to make the electric city car particularly manoeuvrable on narrow streets and in tight parking spaces. Its compact exterior is paired with a practical two-seat cabin, carrying forward key design characteristics of the original smart fortwo.

A limited Couture Edition measures slightly longer at 2,764 mm, while retaining the same focus on urban usability.

Electric Motor, Battery and Charging

The smart #2 is built on the newly developed Electric Compact Architecture (ECA). Its rear-mounted electric motor produces 60 kW (82 PS) and 130 Nm of torque, sending power to the rear wheels. Wider rear tyres are intended to improve stability and handling.

A 35.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery provides a preliminary WLTP driving range of up to 290 km, with claimed energy consumption of 13.6 kWh/100 km. Final figures may change following the completion of European type approval.

DC fast charging supports power of up to 65 kW, allowing the battery to recharge from 10% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes under optimal conditions.

For AC charging, the Pure+ and Premium variants support up to 11 kW, with a claimed 10–80% charging time of approximately three hours. The entry-level Pure uses a 7.4 kW single-phase charger, requiring around five hours for the same charging window.

The smart #2 also offers Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing compatible external electrical devices to draw power through a separately sold accessory featuring a Type F socket, subject to local compatibility.

Suspension, Handling and Safety

The smart #2 introduces a five-link rear suspension, which the manufacturer describes as a first in its class.

Combined with the floor-mounted battery's low centre of gravity and revised steering geometry, the suspension is designed to improve agility, stability and ride comfort in both urban and highway driving.

The vehicle also features the new Tridion Cell Evo safety structure, an evolution of smart's original passenger safety cell.

Driver-assistance technologies include smart Pilot Assist, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, Highway Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Collision Mitigation and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Equipment availability is subject to variant and market specifications.

Interior, Infotainment and Connectivity

Inside, the smart #2 features an S-shaped dashboard, a continuous bench-style seating arrangement and an open cabin layout designed to make efficient use of the available space.

A 10.1-inch central touchscreen is paired with an 8.8-inch digital driver display. Connectivity features include 4G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, while an eight-year Connectivity Package provides access to connected vehicle services.

The dashboard also incorporates smart Pillar, a mounting point designed to accommodate small accessories within easy reach of the occupants.

Smart #2 Variants and Equipment

The European line-up comprises three main variants—Pure, Pure+ and Premium—alongside a limited Couture Edition.

Pure: Includes LED headlights and taillights with automatic high beam, Vehicle-to-Load functionality, smart Pilot Assist, adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go and Highway Assist.

Pure+: Adds 11 kW AC charging and a heated driver's seat.

Premium: Adds a glass roof, heated synthetic-leather front seats, a seven-speaker Sennheiser sound system and further two-tone exterior and interior options.

Couture Edition: Limited to 999 units in Europe, this special edition features Atelier White Matte paint, a Platinum Gold roof, 16-inch Lyra wheels with gold accents and a numbered interior badge. It includes the Premium specification, ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel, wireless charging and navigation.

The Couture Edition measures 2,764 mm in length, compared with 2,746 mm for the standard variants.

Smart #2 Launch, Pricing and Availability

Wolfgang Ufer, CEO of smart Europe, described the #2 as an established automotive icon reimagined for modern urban mobility.

The vehicle has undergone testing on proving grounds, in wind tunnels and on public roads across different climates. It is currently undergoing European type approval, meaning final specifications, equipment and performance figures remain subject to change.

Smart has not yet announced European pricing or delivery dates. Availability and pricing for the UAE and other Middle Eastern markets also remain unconfirmed.
