Range Rover, part of JLR, the British luxury automotive group owned by India’s Tata Group, has launched its first fully electric flagship SUV, describing it as quieter, more responsive and offering more torque than any Range Rover to date. Built in Solihull alongside mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and combustion-powered versions, the Range Rover Electric is available to order in the US from $138,000, approximately AED 506,800.
Powering the new electric Range Rover are two permanent-magnet 260 kW electric motors, producing a combined 542 hp and 627 lb-ft, or around 850 Nm, with Range Rover claiming V8-level performance. The motors use silicon-carbide semiconductors and are said to generate 20% more torque than similarly sized units.
The Range Rover Electric accelerates from 0–60 mph in as little as 4.3 seconds, while 50–75 mph takes 2.7 seconds. EPA range is up to 333 miles, or around 536 km.
Its 118.5 kWh usable lithium-ion battery uses 344 prismatic cells in a double-stacked arrangement and an 800-volt electrical architecture with split-charging capability. On a sufficiently powerful 350 kW DC charger, a 10–80% charge takes around 22 minutes, while up to 125 miles (around 201 km) of range can be added in 10 minutes at peak charging speeds.
Range Rover says its guiding principle was to make the vehicle a “Range Rover first and Electric second”, retaining its luxury, design and off-road capability rather than radically differentiating it from other versions.
Changes include an aerodynamically optimised grille, wheels and underbody to improve motorway efficiency, although the aero grille is market-dependent. SV Electric versions retain their own grille design and 22-inch wheels.
The new Intelligent Driveline Dynamics system can vary rear torque distribution from zero to 100%, while Integrated Traction Management can control motor speed within 50 milliseconds and manage wheel slip up to 100 times faster than an equivalent combustion-powered system.
A new Single Pedal mode provides precise low-speed control on and off-road. Range Rover says the Electric can pull away on gradients of up to 33 degrees and complete a rolling ascent on slopes of up to 45 degrees.
Maximum wading depth remains 890 mm (35 inches). A lower centre of gravity and twin-chamber air suspension are intended to improve body control and handling while preserving Range Rover ride comfort.
Owners can use the new Range Rover App to check charge level, predicted range, vehicle location and lock status, as well as remotely activate cabin purification or the heated steering wheel.
Charging can also be scheduled when the SUV is plugged in, allowing owners to take advantage of lower electricity tariffs where available. North American vehicles have built-in NACS compatibility for access to Tesla Superchargers, while an optional Range Rover home charger is also offered.
JLR says the Range Rover Electric has undergone more testing than any previous Range Rover, including more than 250,000 hours of virtual development and over 900,000 miles of physical testing – equivalent to roughly 38 journeys around the world.
Testing ranged from temperatures of -40°F in Arjeplog, Sweden, to the Dubai desert, as well as JLR’s Eastnor Castle off-road facility in the UK.
Battery testing includes multi-axis vibration and shock testing at temperatures ranging from -40°F to 194°F. The cells are protected by a high-strength aluminium enclosure, with JLR saying its safety measures exceed industry standards.
Each vehicle also features a Battery Digital Twin monitoring more than 900 diagnostic data points. Combined with over-the-air software capability, it is designed to support predictive maintenance and battery management.
The electric propulsion system is covered by an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty, although exact coverage varies by market.
Order books are open for short- and, depending on market, long-wheelbase versions. Specifications include SE and Autobiography, alongside SV, SV Black and SV Ultra models.
A First Edition is offered in Belgravia Green, Santorini Black or Varesine Blue, paired with a Light Cloud interior combining Ultrafabrics PU and Kvadrat materials.
Range Rover is one of JLR’s four brands, alongside Defender, Discovery and Jaguar. JLR is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited (TMPVL), part of Tata Sons.
The Range Rover Electric is built at Solihull, where Range Rovers have been manufactured since 1970. Around 9,000 Solihull employees have been trained for electrification, alongside another 1,500 workers across JLR’s West Midlands operations.
The Range Rover Electric starts at $138,000 (approximately AED 506,800) in the US. UAE pricing and GCC launch specifications have not yet been announced in this release.
