The rally-inspired JCW celebrates MINI’s 1965 Monte Carlo victory, with just 52 units to be produced and limited allocations for Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Dubai’s summer is beginning to simmer down. After a relatively quiet few months, the automotive event season is starting to wake up again, and one of the first cars out of the blocks is appropriately small, quick and steeped in motorsport history. We were at The Cars Café in Dubai for the local unveiling of the MINI 1965 Victory Edition, where the covers came off to reveal a Chili Red John Cooper Works covered in unmistakable rally-inspired details. And it really is limited. MINI says only 52 examples will be produced, matching the race number of the Mini Cooper S that won the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally. According to official local information shared with OtoDrive, seven units are allocated to Dubai and six to Abu Dhabi. MINI’s UAE websites list expected availability from September 2026.

The little car that conquered Monte Carlo

The Victory Edition celebrates one of MINI’s most famous motorsport achievements.

In 1965, Finnish driver Timo Mäkinen and British co-driver Paul Easter won the Monte Carlo Rally in Mini Cooper S number 52. The victory demonstrated how the lightweight, agile Mini could take on much larger and more powerful competition in one of motorsport’s most demanding events.

That history is written all over the new car.

The Chili Red bodywork is crossed by white asymmetric sport stripes stretching from the bonnet across the roof and towards the rear, while large white 52 graphics appear on the doors. A small 1965 decal on the C-pillar provides another nod to the rally winner.

The contrast continues with an edition-exclusive Glazed White roof and matching white mirror caps, while a panoramic glass roof is also offered. The car sits on 18-inch JCW Lap Spoke two-tone alloy wheels, complemented by edition-specific wheel-hub and valve-cover details.

Rally details continue inside

The historical references continue in the cabin, which uses the familiar JCW anthracite-and-red colour scheme.

The door sills carry 1965 Victory Edition detailing, while “1965” also appears on the steering wheel and centre console. A dedication on the driver’s door commemorates the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally winners.

Even the key gets its own piece of rally history. The bespoke key-fob cover carries the number 52, referencing Mäkinen and Easter’s winning car.

231 PS John Cooper Works power

The UAE-spec Victory Edition is based on the petrol-powered MINI John Cooper Works.

Its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine produces 170 kW, or 231 PS, and 380 Nm, with drive going to the front wheels. MINI quotes a 0–100 km/h sprint time of just 6.1 seconds and a 250 km/h top speed.

There are no claims of extra performance specifically for the Victory Edition; instead, its appeal lies in combining the current JCW package with one of the most recognisable stories from MINI’s rallying past.

A MINI that brings back memories

There was another reason I was excited to see it, and not simply because the launch marked the return of Dubai’s automotive event season.

Many years ago, I had a manual MINI John Cooper Works on review, and it remains one of the most entertaining cars I have driven. The compact dimensions, light-footed nature, performance and, most importantly, the involvement of that manual gearbox made it an absolute hoot. It was memorable enough to earn a place on my personal list of the 10 best cars I’ve driven.

The 1965 Victory Edition adds something else, a direct visual connection to the moment when a tiny Mini wearing number 52 took on the Monte Carlo Rally and won.

With only 52 being produced, and just seven allocated to Dubai and six to Abu Dhabi, it will also be one of the rarer MINIs to reach UAE roads. Expect pricing to be north of AED 200,000 (approximately US$54,460).
