The legendary 4x4 SUV brand debuts with OAA validation, rugged body-on-frame engineering, triple diff locks, advanced off-road tech and two adventure-ready models

Towell Auto Group has brought the 212 off-road SUV brand to Oman, introducing a name that’s long been associated with proper, no-nonsense 4x4 capability. At a time when most SUVs are leaning towards comfort and city use, the 212 lineup takes a different approach — one that’s clearly built for Oman’s mountains, wadis and desert terrain. The range includes two models, the 212 Adventurer and the 212 Navigator, both designed with a focus on durability, mechanical simplicity and serious off-road performance rather than just on-road appeal.

Built and tested for Oman

One of the key highlights of the launch is its validation by the Oman Automobile Association, which comes after local testing across different terrains. That’s important, because it gives the 212 some real-world credibility in conditions that actually matter to drivers in Oman.

Unlike many modern SUVs that rely heavily on electronics, the 212 4x4 SUV sticks to a more traditional formula. It uses a body-on-frame chassis, built from high-strength steel, along with triple differential locks, rigid axles and multiple terrain modes. It’s the kind of setup you’d expect from a vehicle that’s meant to be taken seriously off-road.

A name with history

The story behind the 212 goes back decades. It comes from Beijing Automobile Works, a manufacturer that’s been around since 1958. The original 212 was introduced in 1961 and quickly became known for its toughness, especially in military and utility roles.

While the latest version is far more modern, it hasn’t lost that core identity. It still feels like a vehicle built for function first, with just enough refinement to make it usable every day.

212 Adventurer

The 212 Adventurer is positioned as the more accessible option in the lineup, but it still packs serious capability. With 235 mm ground clearance, strong approach and departure angles, and a 659 mm wading depth, it’s more than ready for typical off-road conditions.

It’s powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine producing 170 kW and 390 Nm, paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. There are also multiple terrain modes, including Sand, Rock and Mud, which should make it adaptable to different environments.

212 Navigator

At the top of the range sits the 212 Navigator, which pushes things a bit further. It offers higher ground clearance, better approach and departure angles, and an impressive 910 mm wading depth, which is serious territory even for dedicated off-roaders.

It also comes with added hardware like a snorkel and other off-road-focused equipment straight from the factory, making it clear that this version is aimed at buyers who plan to use it properly.

What the brand says

According to Towell Auto Group, the idea behind bringing the 212 SUV to Oman is simple, offer something that stays true to traditional off-road engineering while still meeting modern expectations.

For a market like Oman, where driving often goes beyond paved roads, that approach might actually make a lot of sense.
