Chinese automotive giant BYD is pushing deeper into the premium electric vehicle segment with the launch of the refreshed Denza N9 SUV, under its luxury sub-brand Denza. Over 100 upgrades

Unveiled in Guangzhou, the updated Denza N9 plug-in hybrid SUV arrives with more than 100 enhancements, including improvements to battery range, interior refinement, and charging performance. According to Denza’s general manager Li Hui, the new upgrades aim to set a benchmark in premium EV technology and elevate the overall ownership experience.

Pricing for the refreshed model in China now starts at around 409,800 yuan (approx. AED 208,000), marking a slight increase over the outgoing version. Despite the price bump, the added features and advanced EV capabilities are expected to strengthen its appeal among buyers looking for premium SUVs with cutting-edge tech.

Denza reaches 500,000 vehicles

The launch also coincides with a significant milestone, as Denza celebrates production of its 500,000th vehicle, reinforcing its rapid growth in the premium automotive segment. The milestone model, known as the N9 Flash Charging Edition, highlights the brand’s focus on next-generation battery and charging systems.

Originally a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz, Denza became fully owned by BYD in 2024 and has since evolved into a key pillar of the company’s global luxury EV strategy.

Targeting luxury buyers

Denza is clearly aiming to attract customers from established European brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi. According to company data, nearly 70% of Denza buyers in China previously owned premium European vehicles, indicating a shift towards technology-first luxury cars.

Flash-charging takes centre stage

A major highlight of the Denza N9 SUV is its flash-charging technology, powered by BYD’s latest Blade Battery innovation. The system is capable of charging from 20% to nearly full in under 12 minutes under optimal conditions, significantly outperforming many competitors.

For comparison, the Tesla Model X typically requires around 25-35 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% using a fast charger, giving BYD a strong edge in EV charging speed and convenience.

Global ambitions grow

With domestic competition heating up, BYD is accelerating its push into international markets, positioning Denza as a global premium EV brand. The company recently expanded into Europe with a high-profile launch event in Paris featuring Daniel Craig, best known for his role as James Bond.

As electric vehicles continue to evolve, the refreshed Denza N9 SUV signals BYD’s intent to redefine what premium mobility looks like in the coming years.
