Two new Emirates Road lanes to cut peak travel times

Dubai motorists travelling from Sharjah towards Wadi Al Amardi are set to benefit from a 5 km road expansion that increases capacity by 33 per cent and is expected to reduce peak-hour journey times by up to 25 per cent

Motorists using Emirates Road between Sharjah and Dubai are set to get a smoother commute following the addition of two new traffic lanes along a 5-kilometre stretch of the major highway. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that the expanded section was scheduled to open on August 30, 2026, serving traffic travelling from the Emirate of Sharjah towards Wadi Al Amardi. The project expands this section of Emirates Road from six to eight lanes, increasing its stated capacity from 12,000 to 16,000 vehicles per hour. According to RTA, that represents a 33 per cent increase in road capacity, while peak-hour journey times are expected to fall by as much as 25 per cent.

What changes for drivers?

The most immediate change for motorists is additional road space on a heavily used route connecting Dubai with the Northern Emirates.

Emirates Road carries large numbers of private vehicles as well as commercial trucks and serves more than 240,000 vehicles per day in both directions.

For drivers commuting between Sharjah and Dubai, the extra lanes are intended to improve traffic flow and make journeys more efficient during peak periods.

RTA said the expansion forms part of its efforts to improve mobility between Dubai and the Northern Emirates as travel demand continues to grow.

Emirates Road continues to expand

Emirates Road is one of the UAE’s main traffic corridors, linking Dubai with the Northern Emirates while also providing access to major residential, industrial and logistics areas.

The latest project follows several other improvements along the route in recent years.

These include a new access point connecting Al Awir 1 with Emirates Road, upgrades to entrances and exits at several locations, and improved connections with Al Amardi Street and nearby development areas.

The latest 5 km expansion is therefore particularly relevant to motorists making the daily journey between Sharjah and Dubai, with more lanes, higher road capacity and, according to RTA, the potential for peak-hour journey times to be reduced by up to a quarter.
