Dubai RTA upgrades traffic around six school zones

Road and access improvements benefit more than 10 Dubai schools, with new links, additional parking and traffic-calming measures introduced ahead of the new academic year

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed traffic improvements at six school-zone locations across the emirate, benefiting more than 10 schools. The works were carried out during the summer break to reduce disruption to daily traffic and take advantage of lower traffic volumes, allowing the authority to accelerate construction while limiting the impact on road users. The project forms part of RTA’s efforts to improve connections between residential, educational and development areas while providing safer and more convenient access for students, parents and school staff.

Six areas covered by the works

The improvements covered school zones in Wadi Al Safa 4, Al Barsha, Umm Al Sheif, Dubai Motor City, Dubai Studio City and Al Sufouh.

One of the most significant changes is a new road linking Al Qudra Road and Hessa Street through Dubai Motor City and Dubai Studio City. According to RTA, the road is intended to improve access to and from GEMS Metropole School – Motor City.

RTA also added parking spaces at Horizon International School in Umm Al Sheif, increasing the school's parking capacity by 100 per cent.

Further works included improvements to the entrances and exits of the service road next to the Al Barsha South schools complex, as well as at-grade road improvements around The International School of Choueifat – Dubai in Al Sufouh.

Safety measures introduced

RTA also upgraded the road near GEMS Winchester School – Dubai in Wadi Al Safa 4 and introduced traffic-calming and safety measures in surrounding school areas.

The authority says the changes are intended to improve the movement of teachers, school-bus drivers and parents while increasing safety for road users around the affected schools.

The improvements were completed ahead of the resumption of regular school traffic following the summer break.

RTA has also reminded parents and school-bus drivers to use designated pick-up and drop-off areas and avoid stopping randomly or parking in spaces reserved for People of Determination and emergency vehicles.

Drivers should also stop when school buses display warning signs or signals, remain alert for children moving around school zones, reduce their speed and follow traffic signs and signals.

RTA said the measures are intended to provide safer access around schools while improving traffic flow at locations that can experience concentrated vehicle movements during student drop-off and collection periods.
