SAIC Motor has officially become the first Chinese automaker to surpass 100 million cumulative vehicle sales, marking a major milestone for both the company and the wider China automotive industry. The achievement was commemorated during a global delivery ceremony at Shanghai’s North Bund, where more than 10 SAIC brands and 19 models participated in a worldwide relay celebration across key international markets.
SAIC’s journey began in 1955 with the formation of the Shanghai Internal Combustion Engine Parts Manufacturing Company. Just three years later, the company produced its first Phoenix sedan, laying the foundation for Shanghai’s automotive sector.
Over the decades, SAIC has played a central role in shaping China’s automotive industry. Key milestones include the launch of the Santana in 1983, the creation of Shanghai GM in 1997, the introduction of the Roewe brand in 2006, the debut of the Roewe RX5 as one of the world’s first internet-connected cars in 2016, and the establishment of premium EV brand IM Motors in 2020.
Throughout its evolution, SAIC has maintained its “More than Auto” philosophy, focusing on innovation, mobility solutions and connected vehicle technologies.
The milestone vehicle was the IM LS9 Hyper, a flagship model that highlights SAIC’s latest advancements in electric mobility and intelligent driving technology.
It features steer-by-wire four-wheel steering, ultra-vision LiDAR, NVIDIA’s Thor chip, an 800V high-voltage architecture and advanced range-extender systems designed to support future Level 3 autonomous driving and beyond.
The model is also equipped with SAIC’s tri-motor performance system, delivering acceleration comparable to high-performance EVs. Developed in collaboration with Purple Mountain Laboratories, it introduces next-generation safety systems designed for both digital and physical vehicle protection.
Notably, the 100 millionth customer is also a key partner in SAIC’s intelligent-driving ecosystem, underlining the company’s focus on collaboration and innovation.
The milestone celebration featured a wide portfolio of SAIC products, including electric cars, commercial vehicles and heavy-duty trucks. Models on display included the MG4 EV, Roewe M7 DMH, MAXUS eDeliver 5 and several commercial transport solutions.
Joint-venture brands also highlighted their progress, with strong early demand reported for new EV and hybrid models developed under SAIC’s global partnerships.
Simultaneous delivery events were held in cities including Nanjing, Liuzhou and Taiyuan, as well as international markets such as the United Kingdom, Indonesia and Singapore, reflecting SAIC’s expanding global footprint.
SAIC vehicles are now sold in more than 170 countries and regions, with cumulative overseas sales exceeding 7 million units.
Its MG Motor brand has become one of the most successful Chinese automotive exports, ranking as the best-selling Chinese car brand in Europe for 11 consecutive years. In 2025 alone, MG recorded more than 300,000 sales in Europe and surpassed one million cumulative units across Europe and the UK.
To support further expansion, SAIC introduced its “Glocal Strategy” in 2025, accelerating its transition from traditional exports to full-scale global value-chain integration.
The 100 million-vehicle milestone marks a turning point in SAIC’s long-term growth strategy. Since accelerating its shift towards new energy vehicles (NEVs) in 2014, the company has expanded electrification across all segments and global markets.
Going forward, SAIC plans to continue investing in EV technology, intelligent mobility systems and connected vehicle platforms, strengthening its position as a global automotive leader.
In the UAE, SAIC operates primarily through MG Motor and Maxus. The local MG lineup includes models such as the MG 5, MG GT, MG 7, ZS, HS, RX5, RX8 and RX9, alongside electric models like the MG4 and Cyberster.
Maxus focuses on commercial mobility, offering vans, MPVs and pickup trucks tailored to business and fleet customers.
Globally, SAIC’s portfolio spans brands including MG, Roewe, Maxus, IM Motors, Wuling and Baojun, as well as joint ventures with leading automakers such as Volkswagen, Audi, Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac.
