The UAE is set to enter a new era of public transport as Etihad Rail prepares to launch its first passenger rail service on June 30. According to The National, the inaugural route will connect Mohamed bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi with Fujairah, significantly reducing travel time between the capital and the east coast. The launch marks a major milestone in the UAE’s long-awaited passenger rail network and reflects the country’s broader push to improve mobility, strengthen inter-emirate connectivity and support more sustainable transport solutions.
Etihad Rail has launched introductory fares for its inaugural Abu Dhabi–Fujairah passenger service, with a limited-time 50 per cent discount.
Comfort Class fares - AED 109, discounted to AED 55
Premium Class fares - AED 239, discounted to AED 120.
Comfort passengers can choose between Saver, Value and Flex ticket types, with the latter two offering additional flexibility and seat-selection benefits for a small surcharge. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 59 minutes, offering a faster and more efficient alternative to road travel, while tickets are available through the Etihad Rail website and mobile app.
Trains will operate at speeds of up to 200 km/h, delivering a balance of speed, comfort and efficiency for daily commuters and long-distance travellers.
Each train will accommodate more than 400 passengers and will feature both Economy and Business Class cabins.
Onboard amenities are expected to include Wi-Fi connectivity, charging ports, spacious seating and dedicated services for premium passengers. The rail network will also integrate with buses, taxis and other transport modes, ensuring a smooth end-to-end travel experience.
The June 30 launch represents the first phase of a wider passenger rail network that will eventually connect 11 cities and regions across the UAE.
According to The National, additional stations are scheduled to open in phases:
Jumeirah Golf Estates (Dubai) – September 30, 2026
Al Dhaid (Sharjah) – September 30, 2026
Al Dhafra – December 30, 2026
Sharjah University City – March 30, 2027
This phased rollout is expected to gradually expand access to rail travel across the country.
Passenger operations build on the success of Etihad Rail’s existing freight network, which already plays a key role in the UAE’s logistics and supply chain infrastructure.
Once completed, the 900-kilometre railway network will connect all seven emirates and support future regional connectivity projects such as Hafeet Rail, linking the UAE and Oman, along with broader GCC railway initiatives.
A separate high-speed rail project between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is also in development and is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to around 30 minutes.
The introduction of passenger rail services represents one of the most significant developments in the UAE’s transport sector in recent years. By reducing reliance on road transport, easing congestion and improving nationwide connectivity, Etihad Rail is set to play a central role in the country’s long-term mobility strategy.
For residents, tourists and businesses, the June 30 launch signals the beginning of a new chapter in UAE transportation, bringing the nation closer to a fully integrated rail network.
