Ford Bronco Basecamp EREV coming to Australia, NZ in 2027

First electrified Ford Bronco

Ford calls the Basecamp’s setup a “super-hybrid” powertrain, noting that vehicles of this type are also commonly referred to as extended-range EVs, or EREVs.

It combines dual electric motors, a 49 kWh usable battery and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine acting as a range extender, with drive sent to all four wheels. Ford says the electric drive provides responsive performance and instant torque, including on unmade roads, while the range extender supports longer-distance travel.

The company quotes a preliminary 800–900 km WLTP driving range on a full charge. Final figures remain subject to testing before launch. Ford notes that actual driving range will vary with ambient temperature, driving behaviour, route, maintenance and battery age and condition. The WLTP testing referenced is conducted at 23°C without climate control or other electrical loads.

Ford has yet to announce final power, torque, electric-only range or charging specifications.

Built-in camping features

The Outer Banks model features an electrically operated Pop-Up Lift Roof that opens at the touch of a button. An unzippable gusset provides additional ventilation and an open-air view, while rain sensing allows the roof to close automatically.

Both rows of seats fold down to accommodate an available full-length custom inflatable mattress, which is sold separately as an extra-cost accessory.

An integrated 7.5-litre warm/cool centre-console storage compartment can heat or cool food and drinks. It is standard on the Outer Banks and available at additional cost on select other models, and operates only while the vehicle is running. A built-in tailgate utility table provides a surface for outdoor meal preparation and camping use.

Up to 6.6 kW of onboard power

Ford’s Pro Power Onboard turns the Basecamp’s traction battery into an off-grid electricity source, capable of running equipment such as induction cooktops, espresso machines, kettles and tools without requiring a separate generator. Maximum total output is 6.6 kW.

There are two power outlets. The interior port is limited to 2.3 kW, while the exterior connection can deliver up to 6.6 kW when the interior outlet is not being used. If both are used simultaneously, exterior output falls to 4.3 kW.

The exterior port requires an optional adaptor sold at additional cost. Ford also notes that Pro Power Onboard may not be sufficient for all equipment and that using it reduces the vehicle’s battery charge and overall range.

A different side of the Bronco family

Ford says the Bronco name has represented fun, freedom, capability and exploration for more than 60 years. The Basecamp expands that formula as the first-ever electrified Ford Bronco, sitting alongside more dedicated off-road-focused members of the family rather than replacing them.

The target customer does not necessarily identify as an off-roader or overlander. Instead, Ford describes someone who wants a vehicle capable of handling everyday life during the week before transforming into a base for outdoor trips and adventure travel.

Ford believes Australia and New Zealand are particularly suitable markets because of their national parks, coastal trails, outdoor lifestyles and the long distances people regularly travel. The Basecamp is designed not simply to reach a destination, but to become part of the experience once there.

Australia and New Zealand launch in 2027

The Ford Bronco Basecamp EREV is expected to arrive in Australia and New Zealand from mid-2027. Ford will announce final specifications, pricing, variants and detailed availability closer to launch, while prospective customers can already register their interest.

Ford also notes that vehicles currently pictured are either prototypes or digitally generated, with the Outer Banks model shown. Final Australian production specifications, appearance, features and accessories may differ.

With dual-motor electric AWD, a petrol range extender, 49 kWh usable battery, preliminary 800–900 km WLTP range, pop-up roof, fold-flat sleeping area, thermal storage, tailgate table and 6.6 kW Pro Power Onboard, the Basecamp introduces a camping-focused electric SUV interpretation of the Bronco while marking the nameplate’s first move into electrification.
