The concept is a plug-in hybrid SUV, with the production model expected within a year

Nissan has unveiled the new Nissan Terrano PHEV Concept at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, marking the return of the Terrano nameplate as a plug-in hybrid SUV. The concept introduces a more rugged, lifestyle-focused direction, designed to balance the “dual needs of off-road adventure and urban commuting”.

Design

The original Terrano, previously sold in markets like India and Russia (based on the Renault Duster), has been completely reimagined. In concept form, it shifts away from a simple crossover into a more rugged, overlanding-focused SUV.

The design features a bold boxy silhouette finished in matte orange, with an upright stance, wide wheel arches, and functional styling cues throughout. Key elements include a rear-mounted spare wheel, high-clearance front bumper with a topography-inspired design, roof rack with integrated light bar, foldable ladder, and tailgate-mounted spare wheel.

Additional off-road-focused details include visible provisions for tow hooks, bolt-on fender flares, side steps that double as rock sliders, roof marker lights, and a sealed, lighting-heavy front fascia hinting at electrification. Combined with short overhangs and a tall stance, the concept clearly leans towards a modern overlanding SUV design language.

Dimensions & Estimated Figures

Nissan hasn’t announced the technical specifications of the Nissan Terrano PHEV Concept, but we’ve taken a few liberties to explore what it could be.

Assuming those Mickey Thompson Baja Legend MTZ off-road tyres are around a typical 35-inch spec, the Terrano Concept SUV is estimated to measure around 4,850-5,000 mm in length, 2,000-2,100 mm in width, and 2,000-2,100 mm in height.

Ground clearance is expected to be in the range of 280-320 mm, supported by short overhangs that improve off-road capability. Estimated approach angles sit around 35-40 degrees, departure angles between 30-36 degrees, and breakover angles around 24-28 degrees, suggesting strong off-road performance potential if carried into production.

While unofficial, these estimates position the concept closer to a serious off-road SUV rather than a typical urban crossover.

Powertrain

The Nissan Terrano PHEV Concept features a plug-in hybrid powertrain, although full technical details including output and battery capacity have not yet been revealed. The setup reflects Nissan’s focus on combining electrification with long-distance usability and adventure capability.

Some reports suggest it could feature a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor, similar to other Nissan-Dongfeng hybrid systems.

While still a concept for the Chinese market, the return of the Terrano nameplate has strong relevance for regions like the Middle East, where it could potentially replace or align with future Nissan X-Terra positioning. This would place it in competition with models like the Toyota Prado, Jeep Wrangler, and Ford Bronco.

If the production version retains the design direction and targets around 350–400 horsepower, the Nissan Terrano SUV could become a serious contender in the off-road hybrid segment.
