Volkswagen reimagines the legendary GTI formula for the EV era with the all-new ID. Polo GTI, combining front-wheel-drive performance, retro-inspired design, and advanced EV technology.

Hot hatch fans and EV enthusiasts have something new to talk about, the all-electric Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI has made its world debut, marking a major shift in the brand’s iconic GTI legacy. Nearly 50 years after the original Golf GTI (1976), Volkswagen is now bringing the performance badge into the electric vehicle era, with pre-sales scheduled to begin in autumn 2026.

GTI-inspired exterior design

The Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI continues the familiar GTI design philosophy, drawing inspiration from the original 1976 Golf GTI and the 2006 Polo GTI. Volkswagen describes the styling under its “Pure Positive” design language, combining clean proportions with sporty detailing.

The compact EV hot hatch measures 4,096 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,513 mm in height, with a 2,599 mm wheelbase and a kerb weight of 1,540 kg. It rides on 19-inch alloy wheels and features signature GTI design cues including the red GTI stripe with 3D logo, illuminated VW badge, IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, vertical LED bumper accents, honeycomb-style air intakes, and a split roof spoiler.

Despite being fully electric, Volkswagen has ensured strong visual continuity with the GTI heritage through elements like the Golf-inspired C-pillar, red accents, and a two-part black rear diffuser.

Retro-inspired interior and digital tech

Inside, the cabin of the ID. Polo GTI follows the traditional red-and-black GTI theme, with sport-focused detailing throughout. This includes red contrast stitching, tartan-inspired upholstery, illuminated GTI logos, and ArtVelours Eco Soul microfleece sport seats.

The steering wheel features a GTI driving mode button and recuperation paddles, while the dashboard is centred around a 12.9-inch infotainment display and a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit aligned in a clean visual layout. A unique retro mode also allows the interface to switch to a Golf Mk1-inspired display theme, including cassette-style music visuals.

Smartphone integration enables mobile key functionality, allowing drivers to unlock and start the vehicle digitally.

More space and practicality

Volkswagen has also improved practicality in the new ID. Polo GTI, offering 19 mm more interior space than the outgoing Polo GTI.

Boot capacity has increased to 441 litres, expanding to 1,240 litres with rear seats folded. The model also supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging, allowing external devices such as e-bikes to be powered directly from the car.

Towing capability is rated at up to 1.2 tonnes, making it more versatile than a traditional hot hatch.

Performance, battery, and charging

The Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI is built on the MEB+ platform with a front-wheel-drive setup, producing 226 PS (166 kW). It accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, with a top speed of 175 km/h.

Power comes from Volkswagen’s APP290 electric drive system, paired with a 52 kWh NMC battery using a new cell-to-pack architecture. The EV delivers a WLTP range of up to 424 km, with energy consumption rated between 14.4–16.4 kWh/100 km.

Fast charging is supported up to 105 kW DC, allowing a 10–80% charge in around 24 minutes.

Premium features and smart assistance systems

Optional features include a Harman Kardon 10-speaker 425W audio system, panoramic glass roof, and a pneumatic massage function for front seats, a segment-first for this class.

The model also features advanced driver assistance systems, including Connected Travel Assist, which uses real-time navigation data and traffic light recognition. The system can even bring the car to a stop at red lights within its operating limits.

The ID. Polo GTI also introduces one-pedal driving, enhancing efficiency in urban conditions.
