The next-generation hybrid sedan and Acura SUV prototypes as part of a 15-model electrified push, featuring new hybrid tech, advanced ADAS, and improved efficiency by 2030

During the Honda Motor Business Briefing in Japan, Honda revealed a next-generation Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype alongside an Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype, previewing part of a major electrified product offensive that will see 15 new Honda and Acura hybrid models introduced globally, primarily in North America, by 2030

Official statement

Toshihiro Mibe, President, CEO, and Representative Director of Honda, stated:

“Honda will reallocate more development and production resources into hybrid models to accelerate the market launch ahead of the original schedule and increase the number of compelling products,”. He added, “We have made steady progress in the development of hybrid vehicle technologies, where Honda has strengths, based on our belief that hybrid models will continue to be the key to addressing environmental challenges.”

Availability and roll out

Honda will begin launching models featuring an all-new hybrid system and next-generation platform starting in 2027, while Acura will begin rolling out its first hybrid models based on the same architecture within the next two years.

Additional announcements during the Honda Motor Business Briefing included plans to increase hybrid vehicle production at the Marysville Auto Plant and East Liberty Auto Plant, make all Honda North America auto plants capable of producing hybrid models, and launch large-size D-segment hybrid vehicles in 2029.

Hybrid tech evolution

The next generation of Honda’s two-motor hybrid system has been enhanced through improvements such as expanding the range where the engine operates most efficiently and increasing the driving efficiency of the hybrid unit.

Overall, Honda aims to improve fuel economy in its next-generation hybrid models by more than 10% while reducing system costs by 30%, all while further advancing the brand’s signature driving experience. In addition, a newly developed electric AWD unit will enable highly precise and responsive motor control.

Honda’s future ADAS

Honda also provided an update on the development of its next-generation ADAS (advanced driver assistance system), which is planned for introduction starting in 2028. The advanced system will assist drivers with vehicle operations such as acceleration and steering throughout the entire journey, seamlessly across expressways and surface roads, based on navigation system inputs. By integrating the next-generation ADAS into hybrid models, Honda aims to combine the “joy of driving” with a more stress-free and comfortable mobility experience.

Honda’s next hybrid chapter

Honda’s hybrid strategy suggests the brand is doubling down on electrification without completely abandoning the driving engagement it has long been known for.
