2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid VXR

We take the all-new sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 for a quick spin to explore its sharper styling, upgraded technology and improved hybrid efficiency

Toyota has spent nearly nine decades building a reputation for quality, reliability and innovation, so when it unveils a new vehicle, all eyes turn to it. That was certainly the case when the all-new, sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 2026 broke cover earlier this year. Particularly in top-spec Hybrid VXR, the new crossover is a genuine head-turner. But there is more to this SUV than its captivating form, which is why we got behind the wheel to see what it is really like. But first, the pricing! It starts at AED 105,900 for the non-hybrid EX and rises to AED 152,900 for the RAV4 Hybrid VXR UAE tested here.

Exterior design: RAV4 gets a glow-up

Finished in the same sparkling red paintwork that stole the spotlight at the launch event, our 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid test car immediately stood out. The new RAV4 amplifies the angular design language of its predecessor with sharp creases, flat surfaces and geometric forms that make it instantly recognisable. Despite measuring 4,600 mm long, 1,855 mm wide and 1,695 mm tall, it carries considerably more visual presence, drawing second and even third glances.

Toyota’s latest “Hammerhead” design dominates the front end, featuring a long bonnet flowing into C-shaped LED headlamps and a distinctive hexagonal mesh grille. Black accents adorn the lower valance, wheel arches, roof, spoiler and rocker panels, while the RAV4 VXR 2026 adds 20-inch alloy wheels, the largest ever fitted to a RAV4. Vertical-slat taillights complete what is easily the most distinctive-looking RAV4 yet.

Interior design: Familiar, functional with upgrades

The predominantly black interior is complemented by geometric cabin architecture, a chunky steering wheel and large, clearly labelled controls. Synthetic leather-and-suede seats with blue stitching, along with grey leatherette trim on the doors and dashboard, attempt to elevate the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid interior, but it still feels a touch more subdued than its already austere predecessor. That said, it remains unmistakably Toyota.

The VXR’s 12.9-inch touchscreen is a notable upgrade and prioritises usability with conspicuously large fonts. Wireless charging, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual-zone climate control, and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto enhance practicality, while dedicated EV and drive-mode controls remain within easy reach. Expectedly, rear-seat accommodation is generous, with ample legroom and headroom for adults.

Hybrid Powertrain: Peppy, frugal but unrefined when pushed

The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 2.5L pairs a four-cylinder engine with a lithium-ion battery and permanent magnet synchronous electric motors to produce a combined 236 hp. Power is sent to all four wheels through an e-CVT transmission, making it a capable AWD hybrid SUV UAE buyers will appreciate.

Our drive route included a mix of urban roads and highways. Despite its modest 221 Nm torque figure, the hybrid system feels surprisingly energetic, even with five adults on board. The only notable drawback is the e-CVT’s tendency to hold high revs under hard acceleration, creating an amplified and somewhat unrefined sound at full throttle.Beyond that, the RAV4 feels composed on the highway and confidence-inspiring through corners, while delivering reassuring braking performance. It is also worth noting that this model should not be confused with the more performance-focused GR Sport variant available in some markets. This version prioritises efficiency, comfort and everyday usability.

Efficiency is the real headline. Toyota claims up to 23.8 km/l fuel economy, while we observed approximately 5.9 l/100 km during our drive. Combined with its 55-litre fuel tank, the RAV4 Hybrid fuel efficiency translates to a touring range of well over 1,000 km.

First Drive Verdict: Purposeful, improved and more desirable

Imagine a Toyota crossover that attracts buyers as much for its looks as its legendary reliability. This is the all-new 2026 Toyota RAV4. Based on our initial drive, Toyota’s latest SUV appears sharper, better equipped and more efficient than before. As far as first impressions go, it remains a benchmark in the compact SUV segment UAE, albeit one with a few minor shortcomings.
