Chinese automaker Geely Auto Group has unveiled its next-generation Geely Smart Charging technology, combining ultra-high-power charging hardware, artificial intelligence and new battery technology to reduce charging times while managing heat and battery degradation. In what Geely describes as real-world tests, batteries used in the Lynk & Co 10 and Zeekr 001 charged from 10–70 per cent in 4 minutes 30 seconds and from 10–97 per cent in 8 minutes 40 seconds — the company’s fastest production-ready charging performance to date. The Wall Street Journal highlighted the announcement as part of the intensifying ultra-fast charging battle between Chinese automakers, including BYD, as manufacturers compete to reduce charging times.
The technology debuts alongside Geely’s fifth-generation Smart Charging Station, capable of delivering peak charging power of up to 2,250 kW, as well as a new generation of battery technology.
The 2,250 kW figure refers to the charger’s peak capability rather than the power necessarily accepted continuously by a vehicle.
Geely’s Shendun Golden Battery, developed for ultra-fast charging and high-performance applications, supports a peak charging rate of 12C.
At the heart of the system is Xingrui PowerMind, a smart energy AI model jointly developed by Geely Auto Group and StepFun.
The system coordinates the vehicle, battery, charging station, cloud, grid and energy-storage system, allowing charging conditions to be adjusted dynamically.
Algorithms can predict battery-temperature changes up to 30 seconds in advance and adjust charging power accordingly. Geely says the system is designed to keep average battery temperature below 55°C and peak temperature below 65°C during fast charging.
Thermal management is supported by what Geely describes as an industry-first five-point liquid-cooling system, covering the charging-station energy-storage battery, charging pile, cable, charging port and vehicle battery pack.
Geely is also using AI to address battery degradation associated with repeated ultra-fast charging.
Xingrui PowerMind can tailor charging strategy for each vehicle and battery by adjusting peak current, cooling intensity and charging duration in real time.
Geely has also developed lithium-ion pulse restoration technology, which uses micro-pulse currents to reactivate lithium ions accumulated at the negative electrodes during repeated fast charging.
The company claims combining AI charging management with battery-restoration technology can increase battery cycle life by up to 20 per cent. For home charging, Geely has developed a low-rate charging strategy designed to gradually mitigate degradation from repeated fast charging and protect battery cells over their lifecycle.
Alongside its 12C high-performance battery, Geely introduced a next-generation Ultra Short Blade Battery aimed at improving longevity, safety and charging performance.
Geely-developed laser-welding technology for the cell tabs and covers is claimed to reduce heat during charging by 10 per cent, while the battery’s peak charging rate rises to 6C.
Geely’s announcement places it firmly in China’s increasingly competitive ultra-fast charging race, with manufacturers including BYD pushing to reduce charging times.
The significance goes beyond the headline 4.5-minute figure. Geely is combining a 2.25 MW charger, 12C battery technology, predictive AI thermal management, five-point liquid cooling and battery-restoration technology in an effort to deliver very high charging rates while managing heat, safety and long-term battery health.
The quoted performance remains dependent on compatible vehicles, batteries and ultra-high-power charging infrastructure, while Geely describes the Lynk & Co 10 and Zeekr 001 results as real-world tests.
